While listening to WNYC’s “On The Media” podcast this morning, the topic of internet addiction came up.  Apparently, treatment centers in other countries have been popping up and the U.S. just got its first one!  Brooke Gladstone interviewed the executive director of the center, as well as its first patient in a very interesting segment.

I guess I should have seen this coming as an eventuality in a culture where moderation isn’t typically embraced.  Personally, I agree with Brooke’s opinion that addiction stems from a root and the root should be treated with at least as much effort as the symptom.  Taking away the internet doesn’t change the reason why one became “addicted” to it.  Whatever your beliefs on internet addiction, it will be interesting to see if more of these treatment centers start popping up.  Perhaps all the twitter-happy celebs will start ending up in a new kind of rehab…  Who do you think will be first: Lindsay Lohan or Ashton Kutcher?
